What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that affects around 20 million Americans. The word apnea means “without breath,” and that’s exactly what sleep apnea sufferers are periodically throughout the night. When a person has sleep apnea, he or she will frequently stop breathing for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. The soft tissues in back of the throat collapse, cutting off airflow, and oxygen levels fall rapidly until the brain signals for your body to restart breathing. Most people won’t wake enough during these episodes to realize what’s happening. Snoring, daytime sleepiness, and memory issues may be the only signs of an underlying problem.
How is sleep apnea treated?
The traditional treatment for sleep apnea, the CPAP machine can be very effective. Unfortunately, many people find that it’s too bulky, too inconvenient, too uncomfortable, or too noisy to use faithfully, and compliance is low. These patients are defined as “CPAP intolerant.” If you discover that you’re CPAP intolerant or are beginning treatment and would like an alternative to the CPAP, Dr. Nelson offers another option.
Surgery for Sleep Apnea
Surgical intervention is another approach to sleep apnea treatment. However, since surgical procedures are by nature invasive and it can be difficult to predict the outcome for an individual patient, surgery for sleep apnea should be a last resort after conservative options have been exhausted.
Oral Appliance Therapy
If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, Dr. Nelson can prescribe a compact, comfortable, custom oral appliance made by SomnoMed. A conservative OSA therapy, the SomnoMed oral appliance is designed to position the jaw forward, keeping the airway open during sleep. Dr. Nelson customizes the appliance to individual patients to ensure a comfortable fit. Since it will easily conform to the contours of your mouth, you’ll likely become used to wearing the nightguard in a few short days.
Convenient and Accurate: The ARES at-home Diagnostic Tool
After referring patients to a trusted sleep lab for diagnosis and fitting them with a customized oral appliance, Dr. Nelson can keep track of treatment progression with a modern, convenient tool called the ARES (Apnea Risk Evaluation System) by Watermark.
This portable machine is a home sleep study device that a patient wears on his or her forehead during sleep. Able to store up to three nights of data, the ARES records snoring levels, blood oxygen saturation, pulse, airflow, and head movement. Dr. Nelson can then analyze the collected data and determine whether oral appliance therapy is working effectively. The machine can also be used to screening method for patients who are unsure whether their snoring problem could signal sleep apnea.
