Everyone remembers how bad braces used to be in middle school and high school. The metal brackets would stick out like a sore thumb and ultimately became the source of a lot of teasing. In adulthood, no one wants to go back to wearing braces. Fortunately, there is a solution to this in the form of Invisalign. These clear, plastic aligners are removable and unnoticeable when in the mouth. Nelson Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine offers these aligners for the individual who wants to straighten their teeth.
How Do I Know if I Need Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great alternative for those adults who want to straighten their teeth. Whether you have crowding or misaligned teeth, clear braces may give you the dazzling smile that you have always dreamed about! Because they are made from a clear plastic, Invisalign is a great choice for adults that would like to have a straight smile without the look of the old style metal braces.
How Does It Work?
Invisalign goes through several phases. In the first phase, our renowned dentist, Dr. Nelson, takes 3D images of your mouth. The images are reviewed and sent to a certified Invisalign laboratory, where a series of custom aligners are made for you. The aligners are worn in a specific order, and each set will be worn for roughly two weeks at a time. Dr. Nelson will periodically check on the progress of your Invisalign sets to make sure your teeth are moving properly. If certain sets need to be worn longer or if you need to make any changes, Dr. Nelson will let you know and explain any steps required.
Since the aligners are removable, you can take them out to eat, brush your teeth, chew gum, or do anything you need to do. However, you should keep them in place if you are not doing any of these activities.

A recent study conducted on a closed course revealed that people who drive while sleep deprived commit as many as 3 times more driving mistakes than drunk drivers. Of those driving errors, more of them were potentially fatal (running stop signs/lights, swerving off the road/into other lanes, etc.). Sleep deprivation has been linked to memory loss, lack of concentration, and other impaired cognitive functions, as well as being linked to numerous systemic and chronic illnesses. If that isn’t scary enough, sleep deprivation is only 1 symptom of sleep apnea. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea are at greater risk for numerous diseases, and sleep deprivation is merely the tip of the iceberg. To find out more about sleep apnea, associated health risks, and treatment options, call Dr. Jay A. Nelson and his team at Nelson Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine of Lutz, FL to schedule a sleep apnea consultation today.

Sleep apnea is a disease that affects many people around this country – 20 million to be exact. It’s almost always associated with people who have excessively loud snoring. Though this is usually a precursor to sleep apnea, that’s not always true. A loud snorer may just be that, a loud snorer. To know whether or not a patient is suffering from sleep apnea will require us to review the entire system. It can bring your overall health into question and cause problems throughout your body. It’s true. Your oral health is closely linked to your overall health and when one or both are in trouble, it can have bad effects on the body as a whole. How Does Invisalign Work?
The Invisalign process starts with a personalized orthodontic consultation with Dr. Nelson. Dr. Nelson will evaluate your orthodontic problems to determine whether or not Invisalign is the best treatment choice. If it is, Dr. Nelson will take detailed impressions and pictures of your teeth. This information will be sent to the Invisalign labs, where your new Invisalign clear braces will be custom fabricated. After fabrication, you will receive your clear braces in stages, with each new set incrementally repositioning your teeth until your treatment is complete. You will only have to visit Dr. Nelson about every six weeks so that he can monitor your progress.
Is Invisalign Right For You?
Invisalign is the most convenient and discrete orthodontic solution available. It is perfect for the busy teen or adult. You can easily remove the braces to eat, brush, or floss. You can also remove them for important meetings or special occasions, as long as you wear them for at least 20 hours per day. Since the Invisalign clear braces are made from a nearly invisible clear plastic, you can complete your orthodontic treatment with relative discretion. And unlike traditional braces, you don’t have to avoid your favorite foods or tolerate painful adjustments.
Make an appointment with Dr. Nelson for your customized Invisalign consultation today. Dr. Nelson is a trusted Invisalign provider, now proudly serving patients daily throughout Lutz, New Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Land O’Lakes, and the neighboring Florida communities.

Do you struggle with feelings of drowsiness during the day? Is it difficult to concentrate or remember things at work? Has your partner complained about your loud snoring at night? Combined, all of these are indications of sleep apnea.
Patients who struggle with sleep apnea experience regular cycles of breathing cessation every night. To combat the problem, the brain sends out a signal telling the patient to wake up and breathe. As a result of this ongoing tug-of-war, the patient can be left feeling exhausted and moody during the day. If left untreated, one’s risk for health issues like high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke can go up dramatically.
The traditional treatment for sleep apnea has been a CPAP machine and it still remains the gold standard for severe sleep apnea. It works by pumping a continuous stream of air into the patient’s nose or mouth during the night. However, many people find this device uncomfortable and they stop wearing the mask.
Thankfully, treatment is also possible with oral appliance therapy from Dr. Jay Nelson. Through our hard work and commitment to treating sleep apnea, our office has been accredited by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. In fact, we were the first office accredited by the AADSM in the state of Florida.
Using a specially-made oral appliance, Dr. Nelson’s Lutz dental office can treat your sleep apnea, as well as your snoring. In many cases, the underlying cause for both is the same—obstruction from the tongue or lower jaw. An oral appliance works by repositioning both, ensuring that airways stay open and clear. As a result, patients can sleep peacefully throughout the night without needing to wake up and breathe.
Do you struggle with interrupted sleep or snoring? Have you recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea? Are you intolerant or frustrated with your CPAP? Talk to Dr. Nelson and his team at Nelson Dentistry and Dental Sleep Medicine about treatment with an oral appliance. Through oral appliance therapy, reclaim the rest you and your partner deserve.
Our Lutz office serves patients from Tampa, Wesley Chapel, Land O’Lakes, and surrounding area.
